I [Heart] Community Literacy

It’s my second week as the new Fort St. John Literacy Outreach Coordinator and I have learned many new concepts already. For example, “Community Literacy” is a new concept.   I have a clear understanding of what “community” means. And, like everyone, I have an idea of what “literacy” is. So, what is “Community Literacy”?

Community Literacy is community-based, focused and directed. Community Literacy is as varied as the communities it represents. According to one organization, Community Literacy “exists outside of mainstream educational and work institutions.”
So, let me focus on three aspects of Community Literacy defined by the North Peace Literacy Alliance.
  • Developing key relationships within communities
  • Developing healthy communities
  • Encouraging all members to participate in the democratic process
Communities that practice effective communication work well. When all members are heard and understood, communities become unified, expressive, and exciting.

I look forward to starting this journey as the Literacy Outreach Coordinator. And, I can’t wait to hear and understand your story too.
